Cover of Trail Runner Magazine: Photography

I'm super stoked to bring you a few behind the scenes clips from images that appeared on this month (July/August) issue of Trail Runner magazine as well as earlier this year in March.  On both occasions, the opportunity came to shoot a couple of commercial photography assignments and on a side note, these two images also get picked up by Trail Runner magazine for covers.  This months cover was taken on the island of Kauai, one of the most gorgeous places on earth (anyone interested in a "Location Lighting" workshop in 2011??).  We whipped up a little BTS video earlier this year from our shoot out there, showing some lighting techniques, so check that out too - Kauai Trail Running - Photography.

I hope you enjoy a quick behind the scenes from each of the trail running Cover Shots!  Feel free to fire away with any questions about the shoot!

Thanks guys!
@Dennis- these covers actually ended up being natural light shots. We had lights with us and shot in a few other areas (both with a single speed light and with the Ranger) per my other video, but not for these.

I am a rookie when it comes to agreements and contracts and wonder how your write it so that you can use images shot for a commercial client for magazines as well. Is there a time limit? Are these shots that the commercial client didn't use? It's the business side of things that scare me the most!

@Oliver - Most of my commercial work is set-up so that the images are licensed (non-exclusively) to the client after a shoot. (I always retain the copyright.) If a client desires an exclusive agreement (note: still not releasing the copyright), then that is an option, but they'll pay more $, which most aren't willing to pay. We'll often work out the language in a way that doesn't allow the licensing of images to a competing company for __xx__ duration. Every agreement is a little bit different. In the case of editorial work (i.e. Magazine Cover), this is a huge Win-Win for both the client and photographer. Think about it, companies pay big money to buy ad space in magazines and it's usually translates into a small spot (1/4 page) in an obscure place in the issue. If a client gets the cover of a magazine that's targeted at their audience without paying an additional dime for that space, bam! When discussing licenses with your potential clients, do so from their perspective - how would this agreement benefit them. Hope that helps.
